What is Wrong with the Standard American Diet (SAD)

Most of us are familiar with the food pyramid that makes up the Standard American Diet, or SAD. Most people however do not really follow this diet. And many experts today believe that the SAD is flawed and not actually very healthy. Obesity is a huge problem in the United States and it is getting worse every day.

Why do we need to eat healthy? A proper diet can have a positive effect on every part of your life. It has been shown to increase energy, confidence, happiness, immune system, concentration, and skin health not to mention helping you maintain a proper weight. A healthy diet also lowers your risk for many illnesses including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

So what should we be eating? The food pyramid was revised in 1992. It suggests the following:
6-11 Servings- Bread, Cereal, Rice, Pasta
3-5 Servings- Vegetables
2-4 Servings- Fruit
2-3 Servings- Milk, Yogurt, Cheese
2-3 Servings – Meat, Fish, Poultry, Eggs, Nuts, Beans
Use Sparingly- Fats, Oils, Sweets

The reality is that most Americans do not follow this guide. They tend to eat a higher proportion of meats, and less vegetables and fruits than are recommended. Many experts believe that the food pyramid should be changed again to look something more like this:

Whole Grain Foods- at most every meal
Plant Oils- most meals (like olive oil)
Vegetable- as much as possible
Fruits- 2-3 servings per day
Nuts, Legumes- 2-3 servings per day
Fish, Poultry, Eggs- 1-2 times per day
Dairy, Cheese- 1-2 times per day
Red Meat, Butter- sparingly
White Rice, White Bread, Pasta, Sweets, and Potatoes- sparingly
Alcohol- in moderation

In order to become a healthier nation the people of America need to make a complete overhaul of our diets. We need to eat mainly whole grains, plant oils, fruits and vegetables. One of the biggest switches is away from refined grains like white bread, white rice and past and toward whole grains. The higher the grain is in protein and dietary fiber the better. Also eating more fish and poultry rather than red meat is a good idea. If you follow these rules the result we be better health and more energy not to mention a proper weight.
